GENERAL OVERVIEW
Dan Stih is President of Healthy Living
Spaces LLC, Indoor Environmental Testing & Solutions.
Mr. Stih inspects homes and commercial buildings to identify and correct sources
indoor air quality complaints, including but not limited to mold and moisture,
bacteria, odors, chemicals (VOCs) and formaldehyde, allergens and pesticide
exposure. He is also one of the few qualified to perform surveys and assessments
of electromagnetic field exposure from power lines and wiring errors inside
buildings.
Mr. Stih, an aerospace engineer, retired from Motorola Inc. and worked in
construction before bridging his engineering background with the building
sciences to start an environmental testing and consulting company. His company
has had offices in three states: Arizona, Oregon and New Mexico, which has
allowed him to acquire experience working with mold and other environmental
issues in different climates.
Stih is the Director of the New Mexico chapter of the Indoor Air Quality
Association. He is a board member of the certification body of the American
Indoor Air Council that reviews applications and votes to award the Microbial
Consultant and Residential Mold Inspector certifications to individuals with the
required field experience.
Stih is a member of a committee of The Indoor Environmental Standards
Organization (IESO) working to create an ANSI standard for residential initial
mold assessments. This standard will cover initial assessments, sampling for
mold contamination, data interpretation, report production and post-remediation
verification.
EDUCATION
Dan Stih received his Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering form Arizona
State University in 1991. He took classes in Nursing at Gateway Community
College, Phoenix, and was a certified nursing assistant (state of Arizona) from
1997-1999. From 1998 to 2000 he took classes in construction and the building
sciences at Prescott Community College in Arizona. Under the directions of Tony
Ghram, the chair of the construction department, PCC was on the leading edge
implementing Green Building technologies while building homes. In 2000, Stih
completed a one-year training program with the Institute for Bau-Biologie
(Building Biology) in Clearwater, Florida. The IBE was founded in Germany, based
on the discovery that building materials and construction techniques developed
to rebuild Europe after WWII were causing people to become sick. A satellite
branch of the IBE exists in Florida. The institute offers week long classes
related to testing and mitigating sources of indoor air pollution and
electromagnetic fields. Some of the instructors at IBE have included individuals
highly respected in the industry including Will Spates, Peter Sierck, and John
Banta. Stih has completed all of the courses they offer, including the one-year
correspondence course. Stih continues to earn continuing education credits for
his Indoor Environmental Consultant and Certified Microbial Consultant
certifications. These are board-awarded certifications by the American Indoor
Air Quality Council based on both training and a minimum number of years of
verified field experience. Continuing education credit is earned by attending
national and regional conferences and courses on topics related to this field of
work.
