David D. Schein is an attorney, mediator and arbitrator who has a strong background in dispute resolution and construction matters. From his teen years working on renovation projects to representing a wide variety of construction contractors and subcontractors to managing his own renovation projects, he has a deep understanding of the needs of the construction industry. He concentrates on disputes involving contracts, real estate, and employment related issues.
David has handled over 500 dispute resolution cases. Recent cases have included disputes involving contractor-tenant-owner, contractor-tenant, real estate contracts, landscape contractor-owner, HVAC contractor-owner, GC-owner, injured construction contractor employees, dump truck accidents, Federal contract compliance and municipal contract interpretation.
Dr. Schein is a published author and public speaker. He has spoken to organizations including: Annual Meeting of the Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Contractors Association; Gulf Coast Safety & Training Group; Air Conditioning Council of Greater Houston; Drywall & Interior Systems Contractors Association; Houston Industrial Relations Group; Houston Business Advisory Council; Rice University Management Program; Risk & Insurance Management Society; Annual Meeting of Materials Marketing Associates; Southwestern Paint Convention; National Association of Credit Management; Case Management Society of America and numerous Rotary, Optimist and other business and service organizations.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Dr. Schein has earned a BA in Transportation and Public Utilities at the University of Pennsylvania, MBA at the University of Virginia, JD at the University of Houston and a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia.
David qualified as a Mediator in Texas in 1995 and served as a mediator in numerous cases in private practice and through the Harris County Dispute Resolution Center. He later opened a second office in Virginia and became a Certified Mediator in Virginia in 1999. He now holds all five available mediator certifications from the Supreme Court of Virginia.
In addition, David has completed a special American Bar Association training program for mediation of disputes for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the US Postal Service Advanced Mediation Training for the REDRESS Program and the World Bank Employment Mediation Training. He also completed the Arbitration training by AAA for automobile “Lemon Law” cases.
His construction background includes experience as a corporate attorney with a mid-size oil company helping to coordinate the legal aspects of construction of C-stores for gasoline distribution throughout the Southeastern United States and Texas. He also has training and experience in the use and installation of Hardiplank lap siding, drywall, windows, doors, ceramic tile, decks, plumbing and electrical.
Dr. Schein is the principal of the LAW OFFICES OF DAVID D. SCHEIN, with offices in Virginia and Texas, (10/87 - Present) a private law practice concentrating on counseling businesses on employment law matters, dispute resolution and general business law. He previously had ten years of experience with two Fortune 500 corporations. His practice is heavily weighted toward construction contractors, including architects, engineering firms, environmental, roofing, drywall, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, heavy equipment and trucking companies, and general contractors. David has also served as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Virginia, Central Michigan University, University of Mary Washington, Rice University and other prestigious schools.
